Virtual 50K

Dear runners, greetings from the frozen trails. We hope you are well and finding ways to get in some miles despite the cycle of ice, mud, ice, repeat.

We are excited to announce, the HAT Run has coordinated with Maryland DNR to offer a FREE “virtual” alternative to this year’s race. It’s really one better though because you get to run on the Susquehanna State Park course.

Beginning Saturday, March 20th and through Sunday, March 28th, the HAT course will be marked with our classic yellow pie plates and flags. This is an unsupported event. Start at your leisure on any day and please avoid congregating in groups.

Here are the details.

This is a new event and will require you to sign up using Ultra Signup.  The event will be set up in the next few days, check the Hat run web site and the Facebook    You will be prompted to sign a supplementary waiver, but be charged no fees. Registration will remain open until March 13th.

The Steppingstone Museum ((461 Quaker Bottom Road) parking area will be open daily, 7am – 5:30 pm weekends and 9am-4pm weekdays. Please park only in the paved parking area.

The Course
The course will begin in the front fields of Steppingstone, the same place as always for those who’ve been here before. We’ll mark a trail from the parking lot to the start, and you can see the general location in the drawing below. The course will feature some minor changes due to limitations this year. Why not, nothing else was normal this year. The course is 2 main loops and a modified starting loop.

Please plan to carry your own aid. Water will be available at the Steppingstone pavilion, near the start/finish, and in the Deer Creek picnic area (948 Stafford Road), the approximate midpoint of each loop. These water points are the same as the usual HAT aid stations. There will be NO cups. Water will only be available on weekend days during the hours noted, 7-5:30. If you run during the week, please plan ahead to carry sufficient water.

Swag / Awards
This is a no frills, no fee event. No swag or awards will be distributed this year. We’re going to save all that great swag and bring it to you in 2022. But you know us, we’re giving people, so there just might be an easter egg or two to reward your efforts.

We want to recognize you for your hard work and dedication.  Please email us a picture of your GPS route from whatever tracking device you use and we will post your times.

Now for the important stuff. The park and museum facilities are mostly closed this time of year. HAT Run will place portable toilets in the parking area at Steppingstone Museum. There are also portable toilets at the Park office and maintenance area, as well as in the Deer Creek picnic area, and near the Archer House at the Rock Run Mill area.

Stay Safe and Have Fun
We’re grateful to be able to offer this opportunity to all of the faithful HAT run family. Please enjoy the park in March if you are able and throughout the year. Please respect the trails, the staff and your fellow runners and other trail users. Pack it in, pack it out. Carry any trash you generate and take it with you. Minimize your impact by staying on marked trails only. Be aware of the COVID-19 risk and participate in a safe manner. Stay home if you are sick or may have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19. Share the experience with your fellow runners from a distance and keep your snot rockets in your own handkerchief.
